SPX 2012 - Kitty's Cats Preview

I just returned from SPX 2012. It was colossal this year and I had a great time! It was a real treat to get to talk to some of my favorite cartoonists on the planet, including Renée French, Chris Ware, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, and Frank & Becky. The collection of new talent was astounding in it’s quality and variety, and I really enjoyed meeting everyone!

I was handing out a preview mini-comic of my new web-comic Kitty’s Cats that will be launching this Halloween. You can find some preliminary sketches of some of the characters in posted in my gallery. You can bookmark the site for launch at:

Dick P. Wright - Cancer

Unfortunately, Dick is still alive and well. Lately he is having a hard time finding places that will allow him to light up. It's getting so a man can't kill himself in public anymore!

This teaser image for MadCurry No. 0 was drawn in 1998.

MadCurry - Issue 5

This is the final mini-comic in the original run of MadCurry. It is only 10 pages long because it was split with Joey Feldman's "Insane". The front cover was printed on florescent pink paper in honor of Joey's obsession with with the paint color "Opera" by Holbein. This was photocopied and distributed in late 1997.

Eggs

Ink on Bristol board - 1998

This painting was done as a farewell to the restaurant industry. As you can imagine, it was the end of a very rocky relationship.

Nick K. M. - Loosen Up

Nicholas Kaput Mortuum is a pretty intense guy. Sometimes he needs to relax and unwind.

Nick is one of my oldest characters, originating in my mini comics in the late 90's. I have been working to update and polish his design for a while. I think this sketch is a step in the right direction. let me know what you think.

Vacation = Sick + Family + Allergies + BronyCon

I am capping off my vacation by uploading new sketches. It is a relief to be back to normal at the end of it all.

I spent the first week and a half sleeping off a virus. It wasn't  terrible, but it was tiring, and I could not draw properly. Making no progress on my storyboards drove me crazy!

This was followed by a truncated trip to visit family at Mt. Gretna. It was great to see everyone, especially my niece Keira! As if brought on by some tormenting demons, my tree pollen allergies brought the procedings to an early end. Apparently I am not meant to enjoy the beauty of Pennsylvania's woodlands.

This past weekend was spent at BronyCon, where I had the opportunity to personally thank Lauren Faust and some of my favorite cartoon writers and voice actors for their work. About a year ago, the "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" show and Brony phenomenon hit me like a bolt of lightning. The show hooked into my earliest aspirations, of being a toy designer and animator, and made me confront myself and finally admit who I am. It resurrected a vital part of me that had been dead for eight years. I have never experienced an epiphany of this magnitude, and it has propelled me into ceaseless drawing and writing. I have developed my first new characters and story ideas in nearly a decade, and I am re-teaching myself animation. I owe Lauren and her crew an un-repayable debt, so I intend to thank them in any way possible.

This was certainly not the best vacation, but seeing my family, and the FiM crew made it bearable. Better luck next time, I guess!

From Cats to Rats

I have just uploaded a few more sketches of Anonymous Rat (A. Rat for short), showing his darker side. I am currently storyboarding his first animated adventure, and really enjoy coming up with his facial expressions. I will post the storyboards for comment when they are ready. For now, Pencil sketches will have to suffice.

My two other projects, regarding cats and humans, are on the back burner at the moment, but I will return to them in due time. The A. Rat cartoon has the virtues of being short, self contained, and feasible to complete on my own. I hope you will come to like him as much as I have.

Have Fun!

A. Rat - Exasperation

A. Rat may be made of rubber.

A. Rat - Anger

Anonymous Rat is master of negative emotions.

This rat appeared on a post-it note, so I decided to make him walk. What will he get up to in the future?
